Shield a child through the entire malaria season.
Seasonal malaria chemoprevention: a course of preventive medicine given monthly through the months when transmission peaks.

Across the Sahel, malaria transmission is concentrated in a few rainy months each year. Seasonal malaria chemoprevention gives children under five a full course of antimalarial medicine once a month through that season, so the parasite is cleared before it can take hold. In the trials that established it, the children who received it had about three quarters fewer cases of malaria.

The figures
The same figure, across GiveWell's picks
- Child Survival$3,500
- Malaria Medicine$4,000
- Childhood Vaccines$4,500
- Malaria Nets$5,500
Lower is cheaper per life saved. All of them sit far inside GiveWell's funding bar; the spread between them is small next to the spread between any of them and an unevaluated charity.
What Malaria Consortium does
Malaria Consortium runs seasonal malaria chemoprevention across the Sahel: community distributors go door to door each month of the high-transmission season, giving young children a preventive antimalarial course.
How GiveWell gets there
Chemoprevention has strong trial evidence for reducing malaria cases in children during the transmission season. GiveWell models delivered courses, local malaria burden, adherence to the full monthly regimen, and what the funding displaces or unlocks, then discounts for the share that other funders would likely have covered.
What could be wrong
- The intervention is seasonal by design. It protects during the transmission months, not year-round.
- Effectiveness depends on children completing the monthly courses, which is measured through household surveys rather than observed directly for every child.
- Drug resistance is monitored and is a genuine long-run risk to this intervention's cost-effectiveness.
Every figure is an average program cost, not a receipt. How we phrase things.
